SUMMARY:Malofeev Plays Tchaikovsky
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]The Opening Night of our Classics Series greets this year’s listeners with Leonard Bernstein’s exuberant overture to Candide\, the witty operetta inspired by Voltaire’s satire of the same name. This bombastic kaleidoscope of musical styles contrasts with Richard Strauss’s famed Der Rosenkavalier Suite\, which captures motifs important to the romance of the opera’s plot and evokes an earlier era of splendid waltzes and courting rituals. The frenetic energy of Bernstein’s overture paired with Strauss’s scintillating\, late-Romantic suite sets the stage for the highlight of the evening—Tchaikovsky’s dramatic Piano Concerto No. 1—which soars under Sasha Malofeev’s dazzling musicianship and brings us to the pinnacle of Opening Night. From its iconic\, thundering introductory theme to glittering passagework\, Malofeev brings this virtuosic work to life on the stage for an unforgettable start to our 25-26 season. \nThe Opening Night Gala is sponsored by Carolyn and John Yurtchuk.\nFor information on the pre-concert Gala dinner celebration or table sponsorship benefits\, visit bpo.org/gala.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator css=””][vc_column_text css=””] \nProgram\nJoAnn Falletta\, conductor\nAlexander Malofeev\, piano \nLAVALLÉE / arr. SUMMARY:Folklore & Fantasy
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \n\nMenacing timpani rolls set the tone for Rossini’s Overture to Semiramide\, a deceivingly upbeat narration of a grim story of family rivalries. The piece oscillates between moments of solemnity\, intense dramatic contrasts\, and more playful themes that all come to a close with a signature Rossini ending of peak movement and excitement. Bela Bartók’s Dance Suite follows\, featuring five original Hungarian folk soundscapes composed for the 50th anniversary of the merging of Buda and Pest\, which offers a tonally rich experience and vibrant musical journey through a synthesis of Western and Eastern musical tradition. The pinnacle piece of the concert also draws from folk influences—Chopin’s poetic Piano Concerto No. 1 stands as a sparkling showcase of virtuosity and is artfully brought to the stage by soloist Maxim Lando. \n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_separator css=””][vc_column_text css=””] \nProgram\nJoAnn Falletta\, conductor\nMaxim Lando\, piano \nROSSINI  Overture to Semiramide\nBARTÓK  Dance Suite\nI. SUMMARY:Nikki Plays Beethoven
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nVerdi’s angst-filled overture to the tangled and tragic operatic tale La Forza del Destino opens the first weekend of our Beethoven Festival. The foreboding and melodramatic aspects of the piece are interspersed with sweeping lyrical motifs\, resulting in a theatrical experience full of contrasts and tension. This turbulent theme continues in the symphonic fantasy\, Francesca da Rimini\, Tchaikovsky’s interpretation of the eternal torment of illicit lovers as depicted in Dante’s Inferno narrative\, with Francesca’s retelling of her own fraught story. BPO Concertmaster Nikki Chooi follows these selections by masterfully leading Beethoven’s monumental Violin Concerto in D major\, which is celebrated for its compelling themes\, dramatic structure\, and improvised cadenzas. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_separator css=””][vc_column_text css=””] \nProgram\nJoAnn Falletta\, conductor\nNikki Chooi\, violin \nVERDI  Overture to La forza del destino\nTCHAIKOVSKY  Francesca da Rimini\, Op. 32 \nINTERMISSION \nBEETHOVEN  Concerto in D major for Violin and Orchestra\, Op. 61\nI. SUMMARY:Beethoven's Pastoral
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nOur Beethoven Festival concludes with a musical exploration of the Earth and all its variety and volatility\, as well as an exhibition of the artist’s understanding of the landscapes that shape human experience. The program opens with sweeping\, dreamlike images and orchestral colors that infuse Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun\, Debussy’s ethereal tone poem. Much like an Impressionist painting\, the piece captures nature’s emotional and atmospheric essence through various timbres and evocative images. Continuing this natural contemplation\, Buffalo-born Robert Paterson’s colorful Triple Concerto\, “Summit” compellingly examines the composer’s concerns regarding our planet: can humans truly steward this fragile Earth well? The piece offers a wide array of emotional and natural expressions and ends on a note of both grief and hope for the Earth we call home. Beethoven’s gentle Sixth Symphony\, or\, the “Pastoral Symphony\, or Recollections of Country Life\,” as named by the composer himself\, follows. The piece portrays a charming countryside turn\, evoking deep relaxation and contentment. Just as nature was a place of respite and healing for Beethoven\, this concert offers listeners a similar reprieve in music. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_separator css=””][vc_column_text css=””] \nProgram\nJoAnn Falletta\, conductor\nNikki Chooi\, violin\nRoman Mekinulov\, cello\nEric Huebner\, piano \nDEBUSSY  Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun\nROBERT PATERSON  Triple Concerto\, “Summit”\nI. SUMMARY:Mahler & Mahler
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nOnly sixteen Lieder (songs for voice and piano) survive from Alma Mahler’s vast compositional output\, as her husband Gustav curtailed her publication efforts for much of their marriage\, only relenting upon seeing his wife’s suffering due to a lack of creative outlet. The BPO performs six works that draw their text from her contemporary poets whose works evoke love—intoxicating\, intimate\, infinite\, and reflective of loves’ past. The Lieder are harmonically rich and are both sensitive and dramatic—they are\, perhaps\, reflective of the composer’s own life experiences. Following his wife’s work\, Gustav Mahler’s initially panned Symphony No. 1 employs musical imagery akin to a song cycle. Gustav composed the “Titan” at the same time as his song cycle Songs of a Wayfarer\, and consequently\, themes of travel seem to penetrate this piece. The music interprets a musical journey through life and nature’s joys and sorrows. This program promises the experience of humanity’s universal emotions through the music of the Mahlers. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_separator css=””][vc_column_text css=””] \nProgram\nJoAnn Falletta\, conductor\nAndrea Bickford\, soprano \nA. SUMMARY:Grieg & Schumann: Romantic Impressions
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nThe program opens with Brahms’ vibrant and lively Hungarian Dances. The dances are diverse in their musical inspiration\, as they draw from the aural histories of Eastern Europe\, and were inspired by the cherished traditional heritage of a long-time friend\, a Hungarian violinist. The pieces encapsulate the spirit of Hungarian folk dances while combining them with the Western tradition of music that Brahms composed in. This piece is followed by Robert Schumann’s passionate Fourth Symphony\, emblematic of his joyful marriage to Clara—one of the happiest marriages of music history. It is through-composed\, meaning that each of the four movements blend seamlessly into one another. The work languished for ten long years before final publication\, but the time allowed Schumann to hone the composition into the exact form he envisioned for it. The evening concludes with Grieg’s heroic Piano Concerto\, the longest concert work of Grieg’s entire compositional output. The piece is full of dramatic contrasts of style and mood\, and shines with rich Norwegian folk melodies\, virtuosic cadenzas\, and majestic flourishes. Pianist Adam Golka masters the solo line in this performance. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_separator css=””][vc_column_text css=””] \nProgram\nEric Jacobsen\, conductor\nAdam Golka\, piano \nBRAHMS  Hungarian Dances\nNo. 10 in F major\nNo. 6 in D major\nNo. 4 in F-sharp minor\nNo. 21 in E minor \nSCHUMANN  Symphony No. 4 in D minor\, Op. 120\nI. SUMMARY:Mozart's Mass
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nOur Mozart Festival opens with Symphony No. 38\, “Prague\,” composed on the heels of one of Mozart’s most famous operas\, The Marriage of Figaro’s\, tremendous success. This symphony exemplifies the peak of Mozart’s symphonic compositional style\, as it features sudden shifts from major to minor modes\, and defies listeners’ expectations for symphonic form\, adding to the drama and the effect of the piece. Symphony No. 38 is rich in complex subtleties and lyrical sophistication and spans a full spectrum of emotion. Mozart’s unfinished “Great” Mass in C minor follows the symphony. The mass is his most exalted and personal sacred work and was deeply influenced by the Baroque traditions of Bach and Handel. He composed church music without the demand that these composers experienced\, challenging the idea that musical progress could only be made by moving forward. The mass’ original movements journey from somber to soaring\, with later 20th-century revisions completing the piece. \nMaximiano Valdes\, conductor\nNatalia Santaliz\, soprano\nCamila Isabel\, soprano\nJohn Tiranno\, tenor\nHolden Turner\, baritone\nBuffalo Philharmonic Chorus \nMOZART  Symphony No. 38\, “Prague”\nMOZART  “Great” Mass in C minor[/vc_column_text][vc_separator css=””][vc_raw_html css=””]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[/vc_raw_html][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Mozart's Violin
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nContinuing our Mozart Festival\, enjoy works by two contemporaries of Mozart: Joseph Bologne’s jaunty Symphony No. 2and Maria Theresia von Paradis’s Overture to The School Candidate. The Overture is her sole surviving orchestral piece and is in commedia dell’arte form—one that features many humorous character types familiar to audiences of Italian drama at the time. Mozart’s five violin concertos\, composed in 1775\, culminate in a Fifth that is imaginative\, experimental\, and technically challenging. The themes range from energetic to contemplative\, and Mozart includes musical nods to French and operatic styles prevalent at the time. The program closes with Symphony No. 35\, the fiery “Haffner\,” which honors a former Salzburg patron. Though the story goes Mozart composed it so quickly that he forgot “every single note of it\,” the symphony was incredibly well-received by the public and the king himself. Fitting with a royal fashion\, this composition is bold\, regal\, and brings the concert and festival to a grand and exciting close. \nAnthony Parnther\, conductor\nAubree Oliverson\, violin \nBOLOGNE  Symphony No. 2\nMOZART  Violin Concerto No. 5 in A major\nPARADIS  Overture to The School Candidate\nMOZART  Symphony No. 35\, “Haffner”[/vc_column_text][vc_separator css=””][vc_raw_html css=””]JTNDaWZyYW1lJTIwZGF0YS10ZXN0aWQlM0QlMjJlbWJlZC1pZnJhbWUlMjIlMjBzdHlsZSUzRCUyMmJvcmRlci1yYWRpdXMlM0ExMnB4JTIyJTIwc3JjJTNEJTIyaHR0cHMlM0ElMkYlMkZvcGVuLnNwb3RpZnkuY29tJTJGZW1iZWQlMkZwbGF5bGlzdCUyRjQzQW1JajlkUTE4NDBjenNkeE5DWnMlM0Z1dG1fc291cmNlJTNEZ2VuZXJhdG9yJTIyJTIwd2lkdGglM0QlMjIxMDAlMjUlMjIlMjBoZWlnaHQlM0QlMjI0MDAlMjIlMjBmcmFtZUJvcmRlciUzRCUyMjAlMjIlMjBhbGxvd2Z1bGxzY3JlZW4lM0QlMjIlMjIlMjBhbGxvdyUzRCUyMmF1dG9wbGF5JTNCJTIwY2xpcGJvYXJkLXdyaXRlJTNCJTIwZW5jcnlwdGVkLW1lZGlhJTNCJTIwZnVsbHNjcmVlbiUzQiUyMHBpY3R1cmUtaW4tcGljdHVyZSUyMiUyMGxvYWRpbmclM0QlMjJsYXp5JTIyJTNFJTNDJTJGaWZyYW1lJTNF[/vc_raw_html][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Mozart's Violin
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nContinuing our Mozart Festival\, enjoy works by two contemporaries of Mozart: Joseph Bologne’s jaunty Symphony No. 2and Maria Theresia von Paradis’s Overture to The School Candidate. The Overture is her sole surviving orchestral piece and is in commedia dell’arte form—one that features many humorous character types familiar to audiences of Italian drama at the time. Mozart’s five violin concertos\, composed in 1775\, culminate in a Fifth that is imaginative\, experimental\, and technically challenging. The themes range from energetic to contemplative\, and Mozart includes musical nods to French and operatic styles prevalent at the time. The program closes with Symphony No. 35\, the fiery “Haffner\,” which honors a former Salzburg patron. Though the story goes Mozart composed it so quickly that he forgot “every single note of it\,” the symphony was incredibly well-received by the public and the king himself. Fitting with a royal fashion\, this composition is bold\, regal\, and brings the concert and festival to a grand and exciting close. \nAnthony Parnther\, conductor\nAubree Oliverson\, violin \nBOLOGNE  Symphony No. 2\nMOZART  Violin Concerto No. 5 in A major\nPARADIS  Overture to The School Candidate\nMOZART  Symphony No. 35\, “Haffner”[/vc_column_text][vc_separator css=””][vc_raw_html css=””]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[/vc_raw_html][/vc_column][/vc_row]
