SUMMARY:American Soundscapes
DESCRIPTION:Our season concludes with three iconic compositions and two orchestral world premieres. The program opens with Bernstein’s toe-tapping Three Dance Episodes from On the Town\, a comedic Broadway hit filled with dance\, sentimentality\, and lightheartedness. The musical spirit of America continues with Copland’s emblematic and patriotic Appalachian Spring: Suite\, which blooms with optimism and brims with the tender promise of new life. Starting with its idiosyncratic clarinet glissando\, Gershwin’s jazz-infused Rhapsody in Blue swings and sweeps listeners into a different American soundscape where an improvisational-sounding piano line takes the center of this Jazz-age stage. These quintessential American pieces are paired with two works rooted in our own Western New York. Michael Daugherty’s Niagara Falls is a musical journey through one of the world’s great scenic wonders\, while Buffalo-born Paul Moravec’s Serenade—inspired by the Great Western Staircase at the New York State Capitol\, a marvel of intricate sculpture and history—offers a stirring narrative of ascent and aspiration. This closing concert provides a rich musical portrait of America—both past and present—bound to inspire listeners to appreciate the musical and natural beauty surrounding them. \nJoAnn Falletta\, conductor\nJon Kimura Parker\, piano \nBERNSTEIN  Three Dance Episodes from On the Town\nMICHAEL DAUGHERTY  Niagara Falls (Orchestral World Premiere)\nCOPLAND  Appalachian Spring: Suite\nPAUL MORAVEC  Serenade (Orchestral World Premiere)\nGERSHWIN  Rhapsody in Blue

SUMMARY:Carmina Burana
DESCRIPTION:As the first of a trilogy of cantatas\, Orff’s irreverent Carmina Burana draws from a 13th century compilation of medieval vagabond songs and poems detailing fate’s fickleness\, pagan delights\, and corruption. The primitivistic piece enraptures audiences with its hypnotic sensuality\, preoccupation with a chant-like and ritualistic style\, and powerful rhythms. Fantastic solo voices joined by the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus sing of the full range of human love\, from pining to ecstatic and more. Hindemith’s reworked Symphonic Dances complete the program\, which emerged from discarded ballet collaborations. Challenging counterpoint as well as soft\, dignified passages constitute this Neo-Classical piece written in a tumultuous era of history. \nJoAnn Falletta\, conductor\nSara LeMesh\, soprano\nKameron Lopreore\, tenor\nJoshua Conyers\, baritone\nBuffalo Philharmonic Chorus \nHINDEMITH  Symphonic Dances\nORFF  Carmina Burana

SUMMARY:Haydn Cello Concerto
DESCRIPTION:The powerful\, tense chords of Sibelius’ patriotic Finlandia open a program filled with nationalistic pride. The orchestration is stirring\, powerful\, and yet restrained at times—evocative of the fact that the symphonic poem was written as the composer’s “battle hymn” for Finland as it faced political opposition. Haydn’s high-spirited and dramatic Cello Concerto No. 1 follows\, sparkling and singing under talented young star Sterling Elliot’s fingers. The concerto remained undiscovered for two centuries until its chance 1961 find at the Czech National Library. Unearthed at last\, listeners may once again enjoy its thrilling runs\, expansive melodies\, and delightful interplay between solo and orchestra. Grieg’s four charming Symphonic Dances\, inspired by Norwegian folk songs\, close the program with jaunty rhythms and folk-dance melodies that played a key role in formalizing Norway’s national identity. \nRune Bergmann\, conductor\nSterling Elliott\, cello \nSIBELIUS  Finlandia\nHAYDN  Cello Concerto No. 1 in C major\nGRIEG  Symphonic Dances

SUMMARY:Mendelssohn & Dvořák
DESCRIPTION:The concert opens with Franco-Brazilian composer Elodie Bouny’s striking homage to the Amazon rainforest and the destruction it has faced in the form of Ignis—meaning “fire.” The piece serves as a contemporary complement to Mendelssohn’s exquisite and romantic Violin Concerto\, which features a turning-point cadenza as a center jewel. Award-winning soloist Amaryn Olmeda brings Mendelssohn’s virtuosic and vivacious melodies to the stage. Countering the sparkling energy of the concerto\, but no less joyful\, Dvořák’s pastoral Symphony No. 8 vividly depicts Czech songs and dances through rich\, pleasing melodies and harmonies. The symphony reflects the composer’s musings on the implications of nature\, as well as his own experience enjoying its benefits. \nRoberto Minczuk\, conductor\nAmaryn Olmeda\, violin \nELODIE BOUNY   Ignis\nMENDELSSOHN  Violin Concerto in E minor\nDVOŘAK  Symphony No. 8 in G major

SUMMARY:Pablo's Guitar
DESCRIPTION:This program will take listeners on a tour of melodies hailing from around the world. Bacewicz’s six-minute Overture for Orchestra was composed during the German occupation of Poland and offers an exciting\, perpetually shifting palette of colors. The short duration of this Overture does not keep Bacewicz from demonstrating a litany of orchestral sounds and moods in her composition\, overlooked until recently. Meanwhile\, Spaniard Joaquin Rodrigo’s animated Concierto de Aranjuez features elaborate instrumentation for classical guitar. The piece took its first recorded form as a Braille manuscript carried into Spain by Rodrigo at the outbreak of the Second World War. Fauré’s Pelléas et Mélisande Suite offers a contemplative reprieve in a romantic and tragic orchestral retelling of elicit lovers and their star-crossed fate\, and Alexander Borodin brings the program’s close with his colorful Symphony No. 2\, which evokes the exuberance of Russian folk dances. This concert brings the songs of people across time and space to listeners for an experience full of diverse musical landscapes. \nAnna Sułkowska-Migoń\, conductor\nPablo Sáinz Villegas\, guitar \nBACEWICZ  Overture for Orchestra\nRODRIGO  Concierto de Aranjuez\nFAURÉ  Pelléas et Mélisande Suite\nBORODIN  Symphony No. 2 in B minor

SUMMARY:Brahms & Bruch
DESCRIPTION:The concert opens with The Banks of Green Willow\, George Butterworth’s idyllic work comprised of two English folk songs. The pastoral piece premiered just two years before the promising young composer’s demise in the trenches of World War I. German composer Max Bruch was similarly fascinated with folk song and captivated by Scottish traditions. He wove these melodies into his violin showpiece\, Scottish Fantasy. The orchestration aurally paints many Scottish scenes for listeners as Bruch emulates bagpipes and war music. Meanwhile\, in Brahms’ expressive Symphony No. 1\, finely dubbed “Beethoven’s Tenth”—the composer set out to follow in the musical giant’s footprints after hearing his Ninth Symphony. While many Early-Romantic composers attempted to emulate Beethoven through stark contrasts and an abundance of stunning melodies\, Brahms followed Beethoven’s precedent for allowing just a few musical ideas to undergo a journey and transformation throughout a piece. Through the development of these ideas\, Brahms tells a story\, rife with compelling drama. Due to his perfectionism\, the piece gestated for twenty-two years before he allowed it to be heard by the public. Listeners will swing on the emotional pendulum as the movements progress\, before the concert ends with a sweeping chorale and majestic final cadence. \nJoAnn Falletta\, conductor\nSimone Porter\, violin \nBUTTERWORTH  The Banks of Green Willow\nBRUCH  Scottish Fantasy\nBRAHMS  Symphony No. 1 in C minor

SUMMARY:Tchaikovsky Meets Elfman
DESCRIPTION:A myriad of eclectic instruments—including pots\, pans\, and metal gadgets—accompany world-renowned percussionist Colin Currie and his BPO brethren in performing Danny Elfman’s Percussion Concerto\, which was written for Currie himself. Sounds in the piece are influenced by Elfman’s traveling experience\, where he played many metal-based instruments. The concerto\, offbeat and idiosyncratic\, was orchestrated without brass or woodwinds. Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony was a topic of debate following its composition\, as Russian and Western musical tradition joined hands\, resulting in a beloved\, emotionally lyrical masterpiece. The piece originated as program music—accompanying ideas or a story—about Fate\, and its motif can be heard throughout the symphony. Though once plagued by poor reviews and Tchaikovsky’s personal self-doubt\, Symphony No. 5 endures and proves its widespread appeal as it continues to bring enjoyment to concert halls like Kleinhans. \nJoAnn Falletta\, conductor\nColin Currie\, percussion \nDANNY ELFMAN  Percussion Concerto\nTCHAIKOVSKY  Symphony No. 5 in E minor

SUMMARY:Beethoven's Fifth
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nFour notes instantly recognizable across generations welcome back the much-loved Symphony No. 5 to the Kleinhans stage. The Fifth’s hallmark four-note pattern\, or “short-short-short-long\,” was a revolutionary concept at the time\, creating a rhythm as the subject line instead of a melody\, and one that recurs throughout all four movements. The composer laid the groundwork for future Romantic-era symphonies with the musical triumph and conflict resolution of “light over dark\,” ending on a note of hope and human resilience. Copland drew Dance Symphony’s rhythmic jazz motifs from his evocative\, unpublished vampire ballet about a morbid conjurer who could raise the dead and make them dance. Copland himself described the three movements as “thin\,” “songful\,” and “violent\,” respectively. In his Piano Concerto No. 1\, Beethoven expanded on Mozart’s influence by featuring challenging key changes and bold harmonies in this piece\, exemplifying his first compositional era and style. \nJoAnn Falletta\, conductor\nGeorge Li\, piano \nCOPLAND  Dance Symphony\nBEETHOVEN  Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major\nBEETHOVEN  Symphony No. 5 in C minor[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Shostakovich No. 5
DESCRIPTION:Composed to express his gratitude upon receiving an honorary degree despite not attending university\, a mischievous Brahms penned the tongue‐in‐cheek Academic Festival Overture\, which features boisterous student drinking songs as well as folk songs turned songs of student protest. With the energy of the music and the expansive orchestration\, the piece tends to lean more into the celebratory side of the title than the scholarly. South American composer Miguel del Aguila’s Concierto en Tango for Cello and Orchestra was commissioned by the BPO and principal cellist Roman Mekinulov\, and received its world premiere by the BPO in 2014. The work’s lighthearted\, rhythmic syncopation avoids the melodrama of tango’s traditional form\, while capturing the nostalgia of its joyful expression\, uniquely conveyed by the cello’s depth. Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5\, which closes the program\, is forcedly optimistic and tonal. It proved career and lifesaving for the under-fire Shostakovich because of its patriotic nature and its glorification of Stalin’s Soviet regime. \nJoAnn Falletta\, conductor\nRoman Mekinulov\, cello \nBRAHMS  Academic Festival Overture\nMIGUEL DEL ÁGUILA  Concierto en Tango for Cello and Orchestra\nSHOSTAKOVICH  Symphony No. 5 in D minor

SUMMARY:Mozart's Violin
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nContinuing our Mozart Festival\, enjoy works by two contemporaries of Mozart: Joseph Bologne’s jaunty Symphony No. 2and Maria Theresia von Paradis’s Overture to The School Candidate. The Overture is her sole surviving orchestral piece and is in commedia dell’arte form—one that features many humorous character types familiar to audiences of Italian drama at the time. Mozart’s five violin concertos\, composed in 1775\, culminate in a Fifth that is imaginative\, experimental\, and technically challenging. The themes range from energetic to contemplative\, and Mozart includes musical nods to French and operatic styles prevalent at the time. SUMMARY:Mozart's Mass
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nOur Mozart Festival opens with Symphony No. 38\, “Prague\,” composed on the heels of one of Mozart’s most famous operas\, The Marriage of Figaro’s\, tremendous success. This symphony exemplifies the peak of Mozart’s symphonic compositional style\, as it features sudden shifts from major to minor modes\, and defies listeners’ expectations for symphonic form\, adding to the drama and the effect of the piece. Symphony No. 38 is rich in complex subtleties and lyrical sophistication and spans a full spectrum of emotion. Mozart’s unfinished “Great” Mass in C minor follows the symphony. The mass is his most exalted and personal sacred work and was deeply influenced by the Baroque traditions of Bach and Handel. He composed church music without the demand that these composers experienced\, challenging the idea that musical progress could only be made by moving forward. The mass’ original movements journey from somber to soaring\, with later 20th-century revisions completing the piece. \nMaximiano Valdes\, conductor\nNatalia Santaliz\, soprano\nCamila Isabel\, soprano\nJohn Tiranno\, tenor\nHolden Turner\, baritone\nBuffalo Philharmonic Chorus \nMOZART  Symphony No. 38\, “Prague”\nMOZART  “Great” Mass in C minor[/vc_column_text][vc_separator css=””][vc_raw_html css=””]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[/vc_raw_html][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The mass’ original movements journey from somber to soaring\, with later 20th-century revisions completing the piece. \nMaximiano Valdes\, conductor\nNatalia Santaliz\, soprano\nCamila Isabel\, soprano\nJohn Tiranno\, tenor\nHolden Turner\, baritone\nBuffalo Philharmonic Chorus \nMOZART  Symphony No. 38\, “Prague”\nMOZART  “Great” Mass in C minor[/vc_column_text][vc_separator css=””][vc_raw_html css=””]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[/vc_raw_html][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Grieg & Schumann: Romantic Impressions
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nThe program opens with Brahms’ vibrant and lively Hungarian Dances. The dances are diverse in their musical inspiration\, as they draw from the aural histories of Eastern Europe\, and were inspired by the cherished traditional heritage of a long-time friend\, a Hungarian violinist. The pieces encapsulate the spirit of Hungarian folk dances while combining them with the Western tradition of music that Brahms composed in. This piece is followed by Robert Schumann’s passionate Fourth Symphony\, emblematic of his joyful marriage to Clara—one of the happiest marriages of music history. It is through-composed\, meaning that each of the four movements blend seamlessly into one another. The work languished for ten long years before final publication\, but the time allowed Schumann to hone the composition into the exact form he envisioned for it. The evening concludes with Grieg’s heroic Piano Concerto\, the longest concert work of Grieg’s entire compositional output. The piece is full of dramatic contrasts of style and mood\, and shines with rich Norwegian folk melodies\, virtuosic cadenzas\, and majestic flourishes. Pianist Adam Golka masters the solo line in this performance. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_separator css=””][vc_column_text css=””] \nProgram\nEric Jacobsen\, conductor\nAdam Golka\, piano \nBRAHMS  Hungarian Dances\nNo. 10 in F major\nNo. 6 in D major\nNo. 4 in F-sharp minor\nNo. 21 in E minor \nSCHUMANN  Symphony No. 4 in D minor\, Op. 120\nI. SUMMARY:Mahler & Mahler
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nOnly sixteen Lieder (songs for voice and piano) survive from Alma Mahler’s vast compositional output\, as her husband Gustav curtailed her publication efforts for much of their marriage\, only relenting upon seeing his wife’s suffering due to a lack of creative outlet. The BPO performs six works that draw their text from her contemporary poets whose works evoke love—intoxicating\, intimate\, infinite\, and reflective of loves’ past. The Lieder are harmonically rich and are both sensitive and dramatic—they are\, perhaps\, reflective of the composer’s own life experiences. Following his wife’s work\, Gustav Mahler’s initially panned Symphony No. 1 employs musical imagery akin to a song cycle. Gustav composed the “Titan” at the same time as his song cycle Songs of a Wayfarer\, and consequently\, themes of travel seem to penetrate this piece. The music interprets a musical journey through life and nature’s joys and sorrows. This program promises the experience of humanity’s universal emotions through the music of the Mahlers. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_separator css=””][vc_column_text css=””] \nProgram\nJoAnn Falletta\, conductor\nAndrea Bickford\, soprano \nA. SUMMARY:Beethoven's Pastoral
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nOur Beethoven Festival concludes with a musical exploration of the Earth and all its variety and volatility\, as well as an exhibition of the artist’s understanding of the landscapes that shape human experience. The program opens with sweeping\, dreamlike images and orchestral colors that infuse Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun\, Debussy’s ethereal tone poem. Much like an Impressionist painting\, the piece captures nature’s emotional and atmospheric essence through various timbres and evocative images. Continuing this natural contemplation\, Buffalo-born Robert Paterson’s colorful Triple Concerto\, “Summit” compellingly examines the composer’s concerns regarding our planet: can humans truly steward this fragile Earth well? The piece offers a wide array of emotional and natural expressions and ends on a note of both grief and hope for the Earth we call home. Beethoven’s gentle Sixth Symphony\, or\, the “Pastoral Symphony\, or Recollections of Country Life\,” as named by the composer himself\, follows. The piece portrays a charming countryside turn\, evoking deep relaxation and contentment. Just as nature was a place of respite and healing for Beethoven\, this concert offers listeners a similar reprieve in music. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_separator css=””][vc_column_text css=””] \nProgram\nJoAnn Falletta\, conductor\nNikki Chooi\, violin\nRoman Mekinulov\, cello\nEric Huebner\, piano \nDEBUSSY  Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun\nROBERT PATERSON  Triple Concerto\, “Summit”\nI. SUMMARY:Nikki Plays Beethoven
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nVerdi’s angst-filled overture to the tangled and tragic operatic tale La Forza del Destino opens the first weekend of our Beethoven Festival. The foreboding and melodramatic aspects of the piece are interspersed with sweeping lyrical motifs\, resulting in a theatrical experience full of contrasts and tension. This turbulent theme continues in the symphonic fantasy\, Francesca da Rimini\, Tchaikovsky’s interpretation of the eternal torment of illicit lovers as depicted in Dante’s Inferno narrative\, with Francesca’s retelling of her own fraught story. BPO Concertmaster Nikki Chooi follows these selections by masterfully leading Beethoven’s monumental Violin Concerto in D major\, which is celebrated for its compelling themes\, dramatic structure\, and improvised cadenzas. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_separator css=””][vc_column_text css=””] \nProgram\nJoAnn Falletta\, conductor\nNikki Chooi\, violin \nVERDI  Overture to La forza del destino\nTCHAIKOVSKY  Francesca da Rimini\, Op. 32 \nINTERMISSION \nBEETHOVEN  Concerto in D major for Violin and Orchestra\, Op. 61\nI. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \n\nMenacing timpani rolls set the tone for Rossini’s Overture to Semiramide\, a deceivingly upbeat narration of a grim story of family rivalries. The piece oscillates between moments of solemnity\, intense dramatic contrasts\, and more playful themes that all come to a close with a signature Rossini ending of peak movement and excitement. Bela Bartók’s Dance Suite follows\, featuring five original Hungarian folk soundscapes composed for the 50th anniversary of the merging of Buda and Pest\, which offers a tonally rich experience and vibrant musical journey through a synthesis of Western and Eastern musical tradition. The pinnacle piece of the concert also draws from folk influences—Chopin’s poetic Piano Concerto No. 1 stands as a sparkling showcase of virtuosity and is artfully brought to the stage by soloist Maxim Lando. \n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_separator css=””][vc_column_text css=””] \nProgram\nJoAnn Falletta\, conductor\nMaxim Lando\, piano \nROSSINI  Overture to Semiramide\nBARTÓK  Dance Suite\nI. SUMMARY:Malofeev Plays Tchaikovsky
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]The Opening Night of our Classics Series greets this year’s listeners with Leonard Bernstein’s exuberant overture to Candide\, the witty operetta inspired by Voltaire’s satire of the same name. This bombastic kaleidoscope of musical styles contrasts with Richard Strauss’s famed Der Rosenkavalier Suite\, which captures motifs important to the romance of the opera’s plot and evokes an earlier era of splendid waltzes and courting rituals. The frenetic energy of Bernstein’s overture paired with Strauss’s scintillating\, late-Romantic suite sets the stage for the highlight of the evening—Tchaikovsky’s dramatic Piano Concerto No. 1—which soars under Sasha Malofeev’s dazzling musicianship and brings us to the pinnacle of Opening Night. From its iconic\, thundering introductory theme to glittering passagework\, Malofeev brings this virtuosic work to life on the stage for an unforgettable start to our 25-26 season. \nThe Opening Night Gala is sponsored by Carolyn and John Yurtchuk.\nFor information on the pre-concert Gala dinner celebration or table sponsorship benefits\, visit bpo.org/gala.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator css=””][vc_column_text css=””] \nProgram\nJoAnn Falletta\, conductor\nAlexander Malofeev\, piano \nLAVALLÉE / arr.
